Sweetgrass (hierochloe odorata---North American variety) is grown all-
natural, with no pesticides or herbicides. It is hand cut, dried straight,
especially for basketweaving or other crafts. Length is from 18 to 36 inches
long. Drying, and storage, takes place in a dark, dry environment, to maintain
the green color. The color will eventually fade with age, and turns to a golden-
brown. The
vanilla-like scent lasts indefinitely.

This is the sweetgrass used by Native American Indians for basketry, and
smudging. It is often braided, and burned for its scent in ceremonies. It grows
in Europe, and North America, where the people of both continents
considered this plant to be sacred. Other species grow many places around
the world.

Sweetgrass can be coiled, as you would in pine needle basketry.  Also can
be made into cording, and used in conventional baskets.
(a "How-to" Cording instruction sheet available)

guide is included with all live plug orders.

Most seed from sweetgrass is sterile. Root plugs are the preferred
way of starting a plant.  Plants will spread one square foot per year.
There is no scent to the live, green plant. Dried sweetgrass is
fragrant because of its coumarin content, which is rather "vanilla-
like".
It is extremely winter-hardy, and goes dormant in cold weather. It will
re-sprout when temperatures are above 40 degrees.
In the Northern states full sun is best. When growing in the South,
Midwest, Southwest, and southern California, part - shade is
suggested.
The plant does need water regularly, but doesn't like water-logged
areas. Good drainage is required. It is not suggested to grow in pots
or inside.
The plant can grow anywhere from 18 inches, up to 36 inches tall.
It has an extensive root system, and will spread. It can eventually kill
off other native grasses. It must be weeded, at least twice a year. The
plants need fertilizer, either organic or other types of balanced
fertilizers at least twice a year if you are taking cuttings.

How much do you need? Sweetgrass loses approximately 70 % of it
weight when dried. A 12 square foot area will yield approx. 1 pound
of dried grass. Estimate 1 year after planting plugs for a first cutting.
